Landscape
Lighting
Our Landscape Lighting will expand your options and create a
beautiful nightscape that is pleasing to the eye.
When planning and installing the new landscaping, lighting should
not be overlooked. A well designed lighting system in the garden
can create beautiful effects after the sun goes down and encourages
evening use of the garden. It will create a welcoming effect to
your home entrance, provide security to your property, enhance the
planting and accent architectural features. The low voltage systems
are energy-efficient and can be controlled with photocells and
timers for ease of use. The effect you desire - whether beautiful,
practical or both - is what is seen, not the source.
Driveways, Walkways
and Patios
Unit pavers also known as paving stones and
interlocking stone, are a durable choice that add elegance and
appeal to any outdoor living space, especially in high traffic
areas. Slabs are an attractive choice for lower traffic walkway and
patio areas. They both come in an array of shapes, colours and
patterns that give many design possibilities. There are many
manufactures of these products which offer different warranties on
their products.
Concrete unit pavers (commonly referred to as interlocking stone)
is an ever changing field. Every year there are new styles,
colors and surface textures to choose from.
It is a very high quality product, therefore, a lot of people are
using unit pavers for driveways, patios and walkways. The initial
cost is higher than asphalt or concrete but the longevity of this
product makes it quite cost effective. The winter frost activity
can move these pavers without cracking or damaging them and they
will settle back in the spring to their original position. There
are a number of companies making unit pavers each offering their
own variety of styles, textures and colours. This provides the
consumer with several options to choose from.
FAQ
1. Is it ok to use de-icing salts on my
unit pavers during the winter months?
Yes, most unit pavers are manufactured
to resist the harmful effect of de-icing salts. Please check with
the individual manufactures about their warranties with regards to
these products.
2. Why should I choose unit pavers over
asphalt or regular concrete?
Unit pavers are more durable than
asphalt or regularly poured concrete. Unit pavers are also much
easier and less expensive to repair, if needed.
3. What is efflorescense?
It is the whitish powder-like deposit
that sometimes appears on any concrete products. This deposit is
the residue of a soluble salt that is carried to the face of the
paver by moisture and left on the surface as dry powder following
evaporation of the moisture. It does not affect structural
integrity. Over time, it will usually wash and/or wear off over
time. It is generally recommended to allow this natural process to
take place, over time.
4. Should I seal my unit
pavers?
Unit pavers are incredibly durable. A
sealant will provide extra protection against stains but it will
not increase the durability of your pavers. Using a sealant may
also enhance or slightly change the colour or
finish.
Retaining Walls and
Steps
By definition retaining walls are structures designed to
restrain or retain soil to unnatural slopes.
They are used to bound soils between two different elevations
often in areas of terrain possessing undesirable slopes or in areas
where the landscape needs to be shaped and engineered for more
specific purposes.
Precast concrete are a very popular and
useful choice for walls. They have textures faces that make them
look a lot more like stone than concrete. They are available in a
vast array of sizes, shapes and colours to provide many design
possibilities. Natural stone can also be used with more and more
choices becoming available with many types of stone in a variety of
colours can be a very attractive alternative.
There are many types of walls that can be
built using these various blocks from smaller garden walls,
pillars, seating walls, outdoor kitchens or fire pits to larger
retaining walls to support driveways or large property grade
elevation changes. The larger walls are more complicated and many
municipalities now require building permits. Please check with
your local authorities.
A number of projects require some type of retaining wall or
steps.
- Modular systems are very popular because of cost efficiency due
to the longevity of a well constructed wall.
- Like unit pavers there are new styles, colors and shapes every
year. These walls can be moved by frost but because they are
modular, the frost will not damage the walls and they will settle
back down in the spring.
- These walls can be used in a number of situations and because
they are modular they can be curved to give a more aesthetically
pleasing appearance.
- They can be used for small garden walls or a large wall to
support roadways.
- Wooden retaining walls are still used and can be a useful in
certain applications. Because they can not be curved, they are
usually used in straight walls.
Most of the modular blocks available to
build retaining walls can also be used for steps. Many manufactures
also have pre cast modular step units for various applications. As
with retaining walls, natural stone can provide a great alternative
for a more rustic look.
Computerized
Irrigation Systems
With water usage being more closely monitored and meters being
installed in the Greater Moncton area, these systems will become a
more popular and useful tool in proper water management for your
landscape.
They are designed to water your total property in the most
efficient manner. The number of sprinkler heads and size, pipe size
and nozzle types are some of the considerations in determining what
is best for your property. Every system has to be customized to
your needs.
Wood
Work
Wood fences, decks, gazebos, arbors and other items are always a
popular addition to your landscape. Whether you need fencing to
make your property more private or a gazebo for entertaining we can
help you with any of your wood feature needs.
New Lawn
Construction
To properly build a new lawn there are some important
considerations.
- Is the rough grading completed well enough for natural or
proper drainage of water away from the house?
- The over all grading of the property, surrounding conditions,
on site trees (can they be saved or not),
- accessibility to the back yard, seed, hydroseed or sodding are
all questions to be answered before an accurate estimate can be
completed.
- The amount of topsoil can greatly effect the pricing. The
industry average is four (4) inches. There are studies being done
that are considering six (6) inches should be used.
- Once the topsoil is in place it has to be fine graded and raked
to make sure the rocks and other debris is cleaned up.
- Lime and turf starter fertilizer is important for proper new
lawn establishment.
- Standard seeding is usually the least expensive method for a
new lawn.
- Hydroseeding uses the same seed as standard seeding with
similar fertilizer, paper fibre mulch and water all mixed together
in a slurry and sprayed on the topsoil.
- Sodding is usually the most expensive method for a new lawn but
is the most instant.
- Watering is key for any new lawn. The results from any seeding
or sodding job are directly proportion to how well the watering was
completed.
Tree & Shrub
Planting
New trees and shrubs can greatly add to your landscape with the
vast variety of colors, shapes and sizes. No landscape is
complete without trees and shrubs. The different colors used
is a personal decision of what you like. Some help may be
needed for the best selection of plants to go into various areas of
your property (sun/shade, wind and soil conditions).
